	LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL'S DIGEST

SB 577, as amended, Peace. Corrections: cadet training.
Existing law requires the Department of Corrections to use the
training academy at Galt and the Department of the Youth Authority to
use the training academy at Stockton.
Existing law also requires each new cadet who attends an academy
after July 1, 2000, to complete a specified course of training before
he or she may be assigned to a post or job as a peace officer.
This bill, in addition, would require the Department of
Corrections and the Department of the Youth Authority to
provide 16 weeks of training to each correctional peace
officer cadet, to the extent that funding is appropriated for this
training. The training would be required to be completed by the
cadet prior to his or her assignment to a post or position as a
correctional peace officer.

State-mandated local program: no.
